Belconnen United claimed an eighth straight Women’s First Grade Premiership with a 4-0 win over Woden-Weston on Sunday afternoon.

The title is another one for the successful program at United which has seen them reign supreme in recent years.

Bronte Pyke netted a hat-trick in the win and Jasmine Maguire chipped in with a goal of her own as the Blue Devils continued their undefeated season through 19 rounds.

With a three games still to spare including a catchup game with the Canberra United Academy, Head Coach Antoni Jagarinec was over the moon with securing the title.

“I’m stoked,” he said.

“I’m super proud of the girls. Now we can concentrate on the Federation Cup and the finals, and more importantly look after players.

“This is our big trophy, we play 21 rounds and it is the one we want to win so we have done that and everything else from now on is a bonus.”

Jagarinec said there is no danger of his side taking their foot off the pedal as they get ready for finals but said he will manage his squad through their Federation cup match next week and the remaining regular season games.

“We play to win games, we train hard, we come up with game plans and the girls want to execute those every week,” he said.

“We have a big squad and people are playing for spots.

“We won’t take our foot off the pedal but we need to be smart with the Federation Cup at this point of the season, there’s potentially five games in the next few weeks so we need to be careful with that.”

Three of Jagarinec’s squad have been with the group for all eight premierships, and he praised their hunger and desire to perform at a high level every season.

“I said in the changerooms on Sunday that there’s three girls who have been involved all the way, and some who have been involved in six, seven and so on.”

“The hunger that those senior girls have flows down through the group, and the younger girls come in and they have that drive, they see where they want to be and the younger group can feed off those senior players.”

With United 11 points clear of Canberra FC with a game in hand on the season the Blue Devils will be favourites to take the Grand Final out, but they were last year too, and Jagarinec says that loss in the big dance will drive the side through finals.

“Some of the playing group that have been around for a while, there’s a big sense that they might not have been around this year if we won that [2017] Grand Final so there’s that feeling that we don’t want that to happen again, that’s where the drive is coming from.”

Belconnen will meet Canberra FC in a Grand Final rematch this Saturday evening at McKellar Park, and that game will be streamed LIVE thanks to BarTV Sports.
