2 August 2018
Two weeks prior to finals and the top billers tuning up for their tilt at 2018 glory. No bigger story than the Hawks almighty 233 point smack of the undermaned ‘dogs at the ‘boo! Not even one eyed Hercules Hawk would have tipped that margin, records in all different directions for both the Hawks and Dogs, wanted and unwanted! Elliston also convincing in their disposal of Wudinna United, breezy conditions, but some concern with soft tissue injuries which will keep the medical department busy. Wirrulla formally booking their place in 2018 finals after yet another close fought encounter with the hapless Districts. Nine points in the end, the biggest margin of the day at Wirrulla. Oh what may have been at Tigerland? The Bombers look forward with confidence, key troops returning and prospects looking up.
West Coast Hawks v Wirrulla at Streaky Bay
The Hawks bounce into this match near full strength, and itching to stamp their high energy and authority. The Bombers coming off of a hard fought win and need a good performance this week. Sometimes unfriendly neighbours, the excitement can bubble over the top from time to time, undisciplined acts cost so much more this time of year!
For anyone wondering what the Hawks would do on the rebound after a loss, the answer is clear and loud. There is nothing more that the Hawks could have done to show the football world that they are simply the side to beat in 2018. Slick, fast, well drilled and ruthless. Can this momentum be maintained? Dominant players everywhere last week and most of the year. Jake Mc Evoy and Joe Mc Innis are front line match winners, gone are the days of potential, they are leading the way in a club leading the way. Dylan Kelsh, Cam Montgomerie, Dillon Montgomerie are class players with huge credentials. Aiden Whitford unlikely this week. Dillon Cabot back to the fray after his knee, looks fit and raring to go, brother Corey in and under, handy around the goals too. Mean spirited defence led by Derick Freeman, Kirk Montgomerie and Tyson Montgomerie, Ryan Hicks a great pick up his year. Mark Dolling back next week so the side is settling well for a tilt at glory in 2018
The Bombers must show well here, Hawks are the game style that must be overcome to reach a premiership, no news there though. Streaky Bay is not a venue that the Wirrulla boys find intimidating, they usually perform well here. Ryan Watson must be close, he is needed, Michell Gum has enjoyed an outstanding year, speed, height and skill, he is the full package. Daryl Dudley speed and guile is great to watch, he takes on the play and breaks matches open. Simon Webb is an outstanding agile forward, big contested marks and equally at ease leading quickly to space. He may also spend time up the ground. Willy Mayhew should be back for this one, his strength is a must. Yanni Kozminski a man mountain, a headache for any opposition. The Bomber runners must come to the fore this week, Lachy Ross, Shad Smith, Jake Adamson-Thain are in good form, and Dion Pittaway just keeps racking up possessions, another who can sneak multiple goals.
The Hawks at home always a big task, and they are near full strength. Wirrulla themselves are building, they must keep the ball alive and moving forward with speed, play with the confidence that they display when they are at their best. So many scoring options for the Hawks though, can all be held down?
