ROUND 13 of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 competition will kick off tonight (Thursday) when second placed Barwon SC hosts fifth placed Drysdale SC in a must win game for both teams under lights at Grovedale Reserve.

Going into tonight’s showdown, Barwon last week defeated Bell Park 2-1 to solidy their second spot on the ladder, while Drysdale wasn’t so lucky as they were defeated by Deakin.

There is a five point gap between Barwon and Drysdale as the league stands, so it is set to be an important game for both teams.

On Saturday afternoon, Division 1 league leaders Geelong Rangers are back in action after their bye last week and are set to host Kardinia College at Myers Reserve.

Last time the two teams met at Kardinia College, Geelong Rangers came away with a whopping 6-0 victory over the then struggling hosts.

Kardinia’s Round 12 fixture last week saw the young ‘Students’ comprehensively defeat Surf Coast 5-2. Saturday’s clash with the table topping Rangers will be an important test for them to see if they can compete with the teams higher up the table.

The last time the Rangers were in action was in Round 11 when they came away from their match with Surf Coast 8-1 winners.

Rangers are currently six points ahead of second placed Barwon and have won eight of their 10 league games. They also have a game in hand over Barwon.

Across town at the Deakin University campus in Waurn Ponds, third placed Deakin Ducks will host Surf Coast which has fallen to the bottom of the table after last week’s capitulation to Kardinia.

When the two sides met last time, the points were shared as the match ended in a 1-1 draw at Banyul Warri Reserve in Torquay.

Deakin looks to be the firm favorites going into this game given their position on the ladder. However, Surf Coast will be just as keen to bounce back to winning ways.
