SURFSIDE Waves have ended Geelong Rangers’ spectacular 11 game unbeaten run after they defeated the hosts 3-2 in Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 Round 12 action at Myers Reserve on Sunday.
Stuart Begg and Matthew Long both scored for Rangers, but it wasn’t enough to continue their team’s excellent run of form as Surfside managed to outscore the home side.
Matthew Sheen singlehandedly secured the three points for the Waves, scoring an amazing hat-trick which took his season’s tally to 13 goals.
The result puts the Waves just three points behind the current league leaders Rangers. However, Rangers still have a game in hand on Surfside as well as a superior goal difference.
On Friday night at Hume Reserve in Bell Park, Corio hosted Drysdale, with the home team coming away victorious after recording a narrow but important 2-1 win.
A goal each from Veseljko Graovac and Dragan Plavsic secured the three points for Corio. Nicholas Hopper scored a goal for Drysdale, but it only proved to be a consolation as the visitors couldn’t come up with an equaliser.
The result means that Corio is now 5th on the table with 18 points after two successive victories. Drysdale, meanwhile, finds itself in 8th spot on the table and has only managed one draw in its last three matches.
Lara United came away with an impressive win at Lara Recreation Reserve after defeating Breakwater Eagles 6-1.
Lara was 5-0 up at half time, so there was very little that Breakwater could do to salvage anything from the game as United stretched it to 6-0 in the second half, while David Jeynes scored a consolation goal for the Eagles.
Lara currently sits in 6th position on the league table with 16 points while Breakwater remains bottom of the table with just four points.
At Grovedale Reserve, Barwon hosted Barwon Heads. The game ended in a 3-1 victory for the currently 3rd placed Barwon side and another loss for the visiting Barwon Heads which remain second last on the table with seven points.
Barwon has been victorious in its last three games which has helped it to third spot on the league table. The Blue and Whites are eight points behind second placed Surfside but do have a game in hand.
Barwon Heads have lost 9 of their 12 games this season and only three points separates them from bottom of the table outfit Breakwater.
