Edition 4 April 2018

Message from Executive Officer

Hi All,
This newsletter has some interesting and exciting news regarding some upcoming events.  Please read all information and respond if interested in these opportunities, or at least be aware of what is happening.
One point I would like to cover is the referee development and training.  Last year's survey indicated the area of refereeing was the major concern for most respondents.  DBA have invested heavily in training and education for referees and are implementing changes as recommended.  Some of you will not understand or even like the implementations, however we can not act on a course of improvement if we do not implement the changes recommended.  Coaches, managers and players, please work with us on these changes.  One of the main changes is players will need to be the ones responsible for wiping the floors after a fall.  This is not because it is "below" the referees, it is because this break in play can be an opportunity for referees to refocus, quick chat to each other, or an opportunity to get their breath.  Please help us here by taking on the court wipe or having people available to do this.  There will be other small changes as we work through this area and your assistance in keeping updated with rules, rule changes or referee instructions will assist us in this development.  We cannot make positive changes unless clubs, players and coaches also do.
Another area is score table.  If a score table is not done correctly then it can have a dire consequence on the game.  All teams are required to have scorers on the score table.  If your parents, players or partners don't know what to do - there is ample opportunity to learn.  We will be advertising some official courses in May and June, however anyone who wants to learn can come down on a Monday night for Junior League where Sue is happy to sit with you.  This is also great training for the upcoming Australian School Sports, Arafura Games and any other events where we need to provide capable scorers if we want to have events in the Territory.
Complaints - all complaints, questions and suggestions are more than welcome!  Please send them to executive@darwinbasketball.com.au.  I would rather deal with these directly than have rumour, innuendo and untruths floating around.  Will try and address in a timely manner.
For anyone wondering why the Club and League Championship banners are still not up on the rafters...I am still waiting on artwork from one of the clubs!!  There are no other ulterior motives and apologies to those clubs who have supplied their logos.

Cheers
Kerri
School Sports Australia, School Sports NT and Darwin Basketball Association have been working together to enable entry of an Invitational DBA team to be entered into the Open Division of the School Sports Australian Championships to be held in Darwin in August from 12th - 18th.  Both boys and girls teams will be selected from DBA registered players who are born between 2001 and 2004.  The teams will be partially funded by the DBA, but will still pay a levy of up to $500 for their involvement.  We are currently advertising for coaches and Managers.  If you are interested in coaching or managing these teams and work in schools, then please contact DBA.  Once we have these positions filled, we can start trials for the Open teams.  This is a fantastic opportunity for these Open players to have an opportunity to play in another tournament.  If anyone has any questions, please contact me!
DBA Stadium will be CLOSED on Anzac Day.  NO GAMES, NO TRAINING, NO SHOOT AROUND.

COACHES PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE ZONE RULE APPLIES TO U10,U12 AND U14 GAMES.  IF YOU ARE UNSURE, PLEASE READ Click Here.  As there are no official "Zone Busters", the referee will warn the coach and then if the action persists, will issue a Technical Foul.
TERM 2 REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING PARKING  THIS
SATURDAY 17TH MARCH

You might be aware that this weekend is the NTFL Grand Final, with the South Darwin Rugby league oval being unavailable for parking due to construction of the new stadium I would suspect that both the netball and basketball car parks will be used by our patrons. I hope this doesn’t cause any issues with participants and spectators of both sports, the peak of parking we would expect to be late afternoon from 4pm but as we have games all day it may be earlier. The SDRLC car park holds around 2000 vehicles which we will most certainly miss this year.
Games start at 10am with the main game kicking off at 7pm.
PLEASE ENSURE YOU LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO FIND A PARK BEFORE YOUR GAME COMMENCES

This year marks the celebration of 70 years of Basketball in Darwin.  We are looking to mark this occasion with an event in September.  If you are interested in sharing some knowledge, memorabilia, photos, gossip or just being involved in a reunion of players and supporters, please email executive@darwinbasketball.com.au.  I would welcome input from all clubs as it is important that the history is accurate and preserved for the future. A meeting will be held on Tuesday 8th May for anyone interested in attending.
APPLICATION FOR COACHES FOR 2018 CYCLONES TEAMS (BOYS AND GIRLS)
This year the Australian Club Championships will be held in separate venues from October 1-6.  The boys will be in Kilsyth and the girls in Shepparton.  DBA is now advertising for Head Coach and Assistant Coach for both teams.  Please send an email to executive@darwinbasketball.com.au for further information.  Nominations close on 30th April 2018.  Trials for players born 2005/2006 will be held in May.
Thank you to all players, coaches and officials who have been involved in the Junior League.  We have see a vast improvement in the level of competition, play and officiating and this is becoming a great competition.  Due to these improvements, DBA will be supplying a scoretable official to assist with the proper timekeeping and scoring of all Junior League games on Monday night.  The DBA official will act as chairperson, assist the clubs with scoring, do the 24 second clock (if required) and train anyone that is interested in practising their skills in these areas.  This will assist us in building a higher quality score table official base in preparation of the School Sports Australian Titles, Arafura Games and any other high level tournaments we can attract to Darwin.  We will then be looking to introduce stats to League games,  Please let me know if you are interested in learning or implementing stats.

What is being done about rain affected courts?
We have had several contractors in to advise on the design of the back courts (louvres), where the rain is coming in.  The original design was to allow airflow into the building and it did that job for 33 years.  Unfortunately, with the changes in wet season timing, weather unpredictability, we are now experiencing weather acts at different times of the year, and it is having different effects on the competition.  The installation of fans is also making a different environment in Spectrum Stadium.  We are exploring possibilities of enclosing the courts, to prevent weather situations, but also have to ensure ventilation and heating doesn't become a bigger issue.  We will have firm plans by the end of June regarding what will be done before next "wet" season.

Will the rain cancelled games be replayed?
No competition games have been cancelled as yet, only grading games, so there is no replaying of these games.
If the entire competition games for any round are cancelled, these games will not be replayed.  If some games in a competition are cancelled, these will be replayed to enable equity and fairness in the competition.

Why cant we register on the night we want to play?
You must register at least 24 hours prior to playing to enable your club to add you to the team list.  Please do not register on the night you want to play as this can cause problems with the scoring and results.  It will also forfeit your team, if you have not paid your registration.

Why are Div 5 on back courts only?
The only reason the Div 5 Mens games are all scheduled on the back courts was that was how it worked out when the fixture generated.  Now that it has been bought to our attention, changes will be made in the Div 5 competition to equalise games on all courts.

Why do we only have one referee on some games?
It is always the intention to have 2 referees on each game, however due to other commitments, we are sometimes left short on certain games.  Several teams have NO players who have committed to refereeing so it is difficult for all teams to always expect 2 referees. Please help us to encourage players to commence referreeing as it is a great part time job especially for basketballers who are at the stadium for long periods of time.

Why aren't there more teams for some grades?
Clubs can only enter teams in competitions if they have coaches!  Alot of clubs have the players interested but unfortunately don't have coaches.  If you have an interest in the sport, can talk to children or adults and want to develop, contact your club or DBA about becoming a coach.  It is a rewarding position!

Why don't clubs respond to me straight away?
All clubs are run by volunteers!  Most of these volunteers, not only have full time jobs but they also have families and busy lives.  Please do NOT expect immediate replies from clubs.  If your query is competition related, please contact the DBA.  If you want to contact the club please allow sufficient time for a reply.

How do I become a referee?
Email Brad on operations@darwinbasketball.com.au.

Why do netball use our car park?
The carparks do not belong to any sport.  They are there for all members of the public to use.  During the construction stages at Netball, the Netball carparks are reduced by about 50 parks.  They are encouraging the overflow parks in Marrara to be used, however people will still use the ones opposite DBA.  The good news is that on completion of the new netball facility there will be 150 undercover parks created at netball.

We encourage feedback and questions to be sent to executive@darwinbasketball.com.au
Did you know DBA, as a foundation member receives a dividend from the CAS Club?  Did you know this is dependent on our support?  In order to maximise our share it is important that we as DBA Members show our support and loyalty.  This year we received the least of the Foundation clubs, as we supported the least.  We need to improve this!  ALL DBA members receive FREE membership!  Every time you visit, buy a drink, have a meal or use the bottle shop - it is important that you swipe your card!  We have DBA Temporary Membership cards and Membership application forms at the office and courtside!  Please support the club that supports you!

The Season Changes are in line with other sports and other Basketball Associations in Australia.
It enables people to play basketball in line with other sports or select to play just one season.
It makes it more affordable for people who may only want to play one season.
It enables new members to join basketball after they complete other sports seasons (ie September and April)
The Long season is a "once off" from Feb to Sept and will then be Sept to April and April to September.
The Christmas break in 2018 is a break for ALL! Because it is during the season there is no additional work for club volunteers over this break and enables coaches, administrators and club volunteers to have a real break.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
