NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s Div 1 – Round 9 Review

THE opening game of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 Round 9 was played on Friday night at Banyul Warri Reserve in Torquay where Surf Coast hosted Bell Park SC. Under the guidance of new coach Ante Sarcevic, Bell Park returned to winning ways as they defeated the hosts 5-3.

Sarcevic’s daughter Elisabeth scored a hat-trick while Mary Gazis scored a brace which led to their team’s scoring a total of five goals and capturing all three competiton points. Surf Coast’s goalscorers were not submitted by the club.
The result leaves Bell Park on 4th spot on the ladder with 11 points, while Surf Coast remain 2nd last in 6th spot with 5 points.
On Saturday afternoon at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, the Deakin Ducks hosted Barwon in a highly anticipated local derby. The points were split between the two sides as the game finished 1-1 at the final whistle.
Deakin took a first half lead however it wasn’t enough to secure the three points as Rachael Robertson scored the equaliser for Barwon in the second half.
Currently Barwon is in 2nd spot on the table, while Deakin is just four points behind in 3rd position.
Drysdale hosted first placed Geelong Rangers at Drysdale Sporting Precinct on Saturday. In the end, it was a walk in the park for the ruthless Rangers as they comfortably defeated the home team 12-1 in a whitewash.
Debutante Brittany Elsen and the league’s leading goalscorer Lara Heric both scored an impressive five goals apiece, while Ally van Dalen scored a brace to contribute to their team’s total of 12 goals. Catie Hodge scored a consolation goal for Drysdale.
Geelong Rangers remain at the top of the table with 19 points, while Drysdale are 5th with 10 points.
