Mid-West Mortlock Shield & Port Adelaide Cup Campaigns
The Mortlock Shield Competition was highly competitive this year, with Mid-West impressively getting very close to winning the Shield against arguably one of the best Sharks sides yet. Mid-West should be very proud of their efforts and proves that Mid-West Football still has plenty to give EP football.
This result contrasts with our very disappointing result in 2017. Since then, Mid-West were determined to turn this result around for 2018. This was evident from the very first minute with coach, Jason McEvoy and assistant Scott Feltus, implementing their game plan and players having the determination and desire to work hard for each other as a team, proving they wanted to be there. That determination was no more evident in the last game than Ross Bascomb and Jared Sampson putting their bodies on the line and unfortunately getting injured - Mid-West thank them and wish them well in their recovery.
On behalf of the Mid-West Football League, I would like to congratulate and thank the players who put their hand up to train and play both the Interleague game against Far-West and the Mortlock Shield games. A special thanks to Coach, Jason McEvoy, Assistant Coach, runner and back-up player (16th Mortlock) Scott Feltus and dedicated Coaching Staff including trainers, Craig Sampson, Aaron Grocke and Mick Lymn and our reliable League Secretary, Brenda Tully as Team Manager and Time Keeper.
Well done to Jesse Stringer, being equal runner-up best player of the Carnival, Darryl Dudley, best under 21 player and Jesse Stringer, Darryl Dudley, Mitchell Gum and Kingsley Ware all making the team of the Carnival. Congratulations also to our significantly larger contingent selected for the EP squad, including Jesse Stringer, Joseph Burgoyne, Mitchell Gum, Dylan Kelsh, Remi North, Cameron Montgomerie, Jake McEvoy, Liam Newton, Kingsley Ware and Darryl Dudley. It is not only an honour to represent Mid-West Football, but to be given an opportunity to represent EP is impressive.
An important mention must be given to the U15’s Port Adelaide Cup team, who tried their hardest and showed they never give up. There were some positive signs for next year. Mid-West may not be strong in the U15’s, at the moment, but team success can run in cycles. A special thanks to Shane Pittaway and coaching staff. Also, congratulations to Bailey Hawes, best for Mid-West and Bailey Hawes, Mackenzie Best and Jacob Baldock being selected for the EP U15 squad – a big honour.
Mid-West have proven once again that they have the credentials to be a force in EP football and that our Mid-West clubs and players continue to strongly support our Representative football. Football at this next level, not only provides players with an opportunity to prove their abilities in a high skill competition, but also provides players with an opportunity to see where they can improve their own game. Players are often seen aspiring to lift to a new level in their local competition after playing for Mid-West.
Finally, a big congratulation to both Wudinna United and Wirrulla Football and Netball Clubs on celebrating their Centenaries, with events and matches this weekend. Both clubs have a rich football and netball history and have produced many great players. May they have plenty more seasons to come.
