Coaches play such an important role in the development of junior and senior footballers right across the AFL South East Region and four mentors have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the craft.
Narre Warren senior coach Matt Shinners, SEWF Interleague coach Megan Snart, Lindsay Boribon form the Noble Park Under-10’s Blue and Narre South Lions Auskick coach Matthew De Wilt are the Casey/Cardinia zone Coach of the Month Award winners for the month of May.
Shinners, a two-time premiership coach with Narre Warren in 2008 and 2010, has returned to the senior role after several years of working at the development level of the club.
His returned has sparked a rejuvenation at Kalora Park with the Magpies sitting two games clear at the top of the South East Football Netball League ladder.
The return of former premiership players Trent Shinners and Brad Scalzo has played an important part in the Magpies’ transformation, but the coaching know-how of Matt Shinners has been the number-one reason for their dominant form to date.
Megan Snart was already a well-respected coach long before she took on the job of moulding the first-ever South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) interleague team into a winning combination.
Snart coached the Eastern Devils to Division-1 premiership glory last year, but the challenge of dissecting a list of 60 of the best players in SEWF was a unique challenge of all of its own.
Snart thrived under the spotlight, leading the SEWF girls to a thrilling one-point extra-time victory over Northern at Preston City Oval on May 19.
AFLSE FDM Stuart Clark said Lindsay Boribon’s selection was just reward for his thorough approach to coaching Noble Park team in the South East Juniors.
“Lindsay is an organised coach who communicates very well with his players on match day and spends time working one on one with all players to develop their skills at training,” Clark said, before also praising Matthew De Wilt for his passion and dedication to the recently restructured Auskick program.
“Matthew is doing an amazing job teaching the new Auskick 2.0 content and has all his coaches and parent helpers on board and following his direction.”
All four coaches will now go into the running for the Coach of the Year Award, to be presented at the relevant presentation night at the end of this season.
