NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s Div 1 – Round 7 Review

IT WAS supposed to be the Match of the Round, but the highly anticipated showdown between the Women’s Division 1 league leaders Geelong Rangers and third placed Bell Park at Myers Reserve on Saturday proved to a completely one sided affair as the Rangers retained top spot with a thumping 12-0 victory over their near neighbours.

Despite the emphatic victory, the afternoon was marred by grief for the Bell Post Hill club following a minute’s silence and a special tribute prior to the game for the passing of popular teenager Sophia Gall.
A former player with the Rangers junior girls’ teams who had moved on to Galaxy United in the WNPL, Sophia lost her long battle with cancer tragically during the week, at the very tender age of just 16 years
In an emotionally charged game, the Rangers players came out all guns blazing and proved to be too strong for a Bell Park that is in disarray behind the scenes after coach Wally Ribcak allegedly quit his position last week.
Bell Park was leading the competition in Round 5 but have now had a turn for the worse and have now fallen to 5th position on the table. Rangers, meanwhile, currently lead the pack on 13 points after seven completed rounds.
Barwon SC hosted Surf Coast FC on Saturday at Grovedale Reserve and the home team came away with the points, with the match ending in a 3-1 victory for the home side.
Michaela Buchanan, Briahna Telford and Jessica Kenyon all scored for Barwon which led to their team’s success. The lone goalscorer for Surf Coast was not submitted by the club.
Barwon is currently in second position on the league table, with 11 points. Only two points separates Barwon from current league leaders Geelong Rangers. Surf Coast is in 6th place on the standing with five points and a -9-goal difference.
Over at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, Deakin Ducks hosted bottom side Kardinia College and came away from the clash with all three competition points after defeating the visiting students 3-0.
Deakin’s goalscorers were not submitted by the club.
Deakin currently sits in 4th position with 10 points, just two points ahead of Bell Park. Kardinia College, meanwhile, are still yet to gain any points so far this season and are firmly entrenched to the bottom.
