There’s no doubting the outstanding young talent on offer in the South East Football Netball League after the SEFNL under 19s score an emphatic 58-point victory over AFL Yarra Ranges at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.
The Demons were sharp, both physically and mentally, riding a game-plan built on fast ball movement to a 12.11.83 to 3.7.25 triumph.
Coach Leigh McQuillen was delighted with his team’s ability to absorb a new game plan at short notice.
“The boys have been receptive from the start, they’re really coachable and learnt some structures that they’re probably not accustomed to at club level,” McQuillen said.
“We pressed in certain areas, but at the end of the day it was all about trying to keep the ball in motion, trying to play quick, and if you saw someone free you had to give it. We implemented it well for three and a half quarters and we got the result we came for.”
Beaconsfield’s Myles Currie kicked three important goals, while his Eagles’ teammates Jack Docherty and Luke Bettio chimed in with a couple each. Berwick’s Kane Tyrrell also kicked two, while Narre Warren’s Tom Miller won the best on ground award for an outstanding game through the midfield.
“Tommy Miller’s an exceptional football talent and we had a handful of others with senior experience as well, so we knew we had the exposure to good football,” McQuillen said, before thanking his coaching staff and SEFNL for the opportunity.
Brodie Entwistle, Jafar Ocaa, Connor Guley and Jahvon Bergman were all terrific contributors in the victory.
