Semi Final Game Previews - WOMEN

Townsville Flames v Caboolture Suns, Sat 6:00pm @ Townsville-  All things point to the Flames in this game.  The team is on a 43-game win streak and they have the advantage of already having destroyed the Suns back in Round 12 (95-42).  They are the defending State and National champions and have completely dominated the League for two straight seasons.  Coach Wrobel took over this year without missing a beat, right where Darren Austin left it.  The team has grunt up front in Smith and Flanagan, with Bonke and Edgar making up the defensive core of the squad.  The Suns have struggled for the last 2 seasons with the Flames, going down in 2007 with another big margin loss (45-84).  They will struggle with the offensive onslaught that the Flames bring into every game, with 5 shooters around that 50% from the field or better for the year.  With that said, there is a reason why the Suns are here as they have pressed their way through the season finishing as one of the top two teams in Pool B, before beating the Clippers in a Quarter Final (69-54).  45% from the field in this win, is a sign that the team may have put behind them their run of poor performances that occurred late in the regular season.  The Suns might just need to hang on for the ride in this one!

South West Metro Pirates v Mackay Meteorettes, Sat 7:45pm @ Townsville-  Of the only two occasions these two teams have met over the last two seasons, they have split the games with fractions of margins.  In Round 11 this season, the Pirates managed an 80-77 victory on the back of Brady and Parsons hitting solid percentages from both the field and line, while in 2007 the game went to the Meteorettes (70-68).  Of the two Semi Finals, this one is sure to go down to the wire as history suggests, with the winner not only going onto play in the Grand Final, but they will also gain entrance into the National Finals to be held the following weekend.  With all this at stake, tempers will be on edge and the team who can see through all of the hype will come out on-top.  The Pirates used a carefully crafted defensive strategy last week in their 65-53 upset win over the Thunder and may have trouble executing the same game plan with the Leagues leading scorer (Kelly Wilson, 28ppg) suiting up for the Meteorettes.  Wilson is capable of 50pts as shown in Round 9 against the Cyclones and she will be backed up by the Quarter Final Player of the Week Fiona McGrath.  Early call is for an overtime game, with no way to pick a winner.
