Falzon relieved as Perth end poor run

Report by Matthew Corvi

Perth SC bounced back from a run of poor results by beating bottom-of-the-table Joondalup United 3-0 in their Round 13 NPL WA clash at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday night.

The win was Perth’s first in five games and no one was happier than coach Ramon Falzon.

“A very important result, I’m very pleased with the performance in the second half,” he said.

“The expectation to get back to winning ways after a bad patch affected us in the first half, but as soon as we got that first goal then all the pressure was off.”

Perth had numerous chances to go ahead in the opening quarter of the game, but a combination of in-form keeper James Bosdet and poor finishing prevented the home side from going ahead early.

Despite Perth having over 20 shots, the teams would go into half-time all square, with Perth rarely able to hit the target.

But four minutes into the second halff a defensive lapse allowed unmarked Matthew Milenkovic to score a looping header to put Perth into the lead.

Joondalup were shocked and soon after Perth were 2-0 up when Milenkovic scored his second goal of the game with a simple tap-in at the back post after he was again left unmarked.

The away side had their best chance to get back into the game in the 81st minute with a Alex Wild header smashing off the crossbar and going out of play, summing up a frustrating match for Joondalup.

Frank Furfaro collected Perth's third goal with the last kick of the game after Joondalup were caught napping at the back for the third time in the game.

United Nick Jennings said the result did not reflect his team's effort.

“I was very pleased with the performance; I don’t think the result does us justice. I’m very disappointed with the result,” he said.

“The goals came from moments we should have dealt with but it is what it is, when you’re down the bottom of the league you don’t get much luck”
