NEWS: Geelong Region Men’s Div 1 – Round 4 Preview
By: Lachlan Shirley
LOOKING ahead to another weekend of football in the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 competition, it looks like the players will be greeted with cold and wet conditions on Friday night when Corio SC hosts Breakwater Eagles at Hume Reserve to kick off Round 4 action.
Corio, which currently sits in 5th place on the table, has drawn their last two games and will be determined to come away with three points and keep up with the top four teams. Breakwater is still struggling with its start to the season and finds itself at the bottom of the table after the opening three games.
On Sunday, Lara United will host Surfside Waves at Lara Recreation Reserve, with the game kicking off at 1pm.
Surfside will be looking to bounce back from last round’s 1-4 defeat at the hands of Rangers, while Lara will be hoping to secure a second consecutive win and not let the top two sides get away.
Lara is three points ahead of Surfside, so it will be an important game as to whether Lara can pull away from the lower sides or Surfside can keep up with the teams higher above it on the table.
Barwon Heads will visit Deakin University on Sunday to take on the Deakin Ducks at 3pm.
Both sides have had a slow start to the season, having won only one game each so far. The only thing to split the two sides is the fact that Barwon Heads has drawn one game, which sees the Hammerheads just one point ahead of Deakin.
It will be a tough contest for both Barwon Heads and Deakin, as they will both be looking to secure three points to move up the table.
Barwon hosts Drysdale at Grovedale Reserve on Sunday, also at 3pm.
Both teams are in a healthy position going into Round Four. Drysdale remains unbeaten and has won two games and drawn one, while Barwon is in a slightly inferior position, having won two but losing one which leaves them just one point behind Drysdale and on level points with Lara.
Barwon will be hoping for a better result than last round, after going down 2-1 to Barwon Heads.
To finish off the Round 4, Geelong Rangers will host Surf Coast at Myers Reserve.
It will be a tough task for the Torquay side as they are still yet to put any points on the table. The Rangers, meanwhile, have enjoyed the best possible start to the season and are yet to drop any points having won all their games to date.
