Another Glory late show pays dividends
Report by Jayden Lihou
Two goals in the final 10 minutes saw Perth Glory come from behind to grab a massive 2-1 win at second-placed Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday.
Glory would probably have been happy enough after Henry Hore’s 81st minute effort cancelled out Cameron Edwards' first-half opener.
But they didn’t settle there and Walter Scott snached all three points for the late-goal specialists.
The victory puts Glory just a point behind Cockburn, who suffered only their second loss of the season.
“It’s been a tough week for us but today the boys showed belief in themselves and created some really good opportunities,” Glory coach John Gibson said.
“Credit to Cockburn, they were really well organised and we had to work very hard to break them down.
“It was a tough day at the office today but it’s fantastic to come away with points.”
Cockburn, who had won their last three, took the lead early on with a goal from ex-Glory player Edwards. But they were unable to see out the match, leaving coach and former Glory star Scott Miller with no complaints.
“I thought it was pretty even in the first half to be honest but they dominated in the second and they got the win they deserved,” he said.
“Our boys worked ever so hard to hold out to the 80th minute but we seemed to run out of legs in the end and Glory were good enough to take their chances.”
The first genuine opportunity of the match fell to Glory forward Chok Dau but Cockburn keeper Luke Radonich saved his first-time effort.
A minute later City went up the other end to score when Edwards sidefooted home.
Daniel Stynes had a chance to level for Glory on the brink of half-time after captain Michael Domfeh cut the ball back to him. However his goalbound shot was kept out by a quick reaction save from Radonich.
Glory went even closer in the 63rd minute when Ollie Annis laid off an indirect free-kick to Jake Brimmer, whose shot thundered off the bar.
It was deja-vu for in the 71st minute for Brimmer when his curled shot hit the post, this time from a direct free-kick.
But Glory eventually found the equaliser when the ball was chipped over the defence to Hore, whose deft shot found its way past Radonich.
And five minutes later Glory completed the turnaround after Radonich parried a headed effort to Scott, who found the back of the net to give his side an important victory.
