The highly-anticipated season two of South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) begins this weekend with existing SEFNL teams Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Officer joined by Pakenham on the women’s football landscape.
The Lions will join Officer in division three, with the close neighbours set to kick off the season under lights in a Friday night showdown at Toomuc Reserve.
Officer won three games in its first season last year and will be looking to provide the Lions with an equally tough initiation this time around.
Pakenham has steadily built its list through the pre-season and will no doubt benefit from the coaching experience of Warren Cawcutt.
The Lions have a few players that have played at a high level before but will concentrate their efforts on developing their players under Cawcutt’s leadership.
Win, lose or draw, it’s great to have the Lions on board in 2018.
Cranbourne had a taste for finals football in division one last year, finishing third before being knocked out by Seaford in the first semi-final.
The Eagles won seven games last year but will need to improve to challenge reigning champions Eastern Devils and St Kilda Sharks for this year’s title.
Cranbourne welcomes Beaconsfield to division one after Beacy came from the clouds to win the division-two premiership last year.
The Beacy girls defeated Chirnside Park in the first-semi-final and Mornington in the prelim before proving too strong for Endeavour Hills in an epic battle at Casey Fields.
Teams from the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) will also play a big role in this year’s competition.
Seaford will field teams in all three divisions while Mornington and Edi-Asp will have two teams competing this season.
Tyabb will compete in division two, with Frankston, Hastings, Karingal, Pearcedale and Red Hill taking on the challenge of an 11-team division three.
The three premiers from last season all have tough starts in round one with division-one premier Eastern Devils hosting Port Melbourne, division-two champions Beaconsfield earning promotion and a trip to Chirnside Park, while Tyabb host Edi-Asp in its first home game since taking out the division-three – Development League - title.
Good luck to all participating teams for the season ahead.
