Canberra United Academy 2 (Aoife Colvill 23’, 82’) def. by Canberra FC 3 (Chantel Jones 12’, Diarna Genovesi 19’, Brigette Wright 89’)

A late winner from Brigette Wright has given Canberra FC their fourth straight win and sent them in to second place on the National Premier League Women’s table.

It was a tight battle against the Canberra United Academy at Hawker, and the visitors got on the scoreboard first as Chantel Jones struck a wicked free kick that ended up in the back of the net.

Diarna Genovesi doubled the advantage seven minutes later, and the Academy appeared to be reeling until Aoife Colvill steadied the ship with a well taken chance in the 23^rd minute. The first half continued back and forth with the visitors hanging on to their one goal advantage, and the two sides reached the break as such.

The second half began in much the same manner, with neither side able to find a way through tight opposition defending and a strong battle ensued.

But just inside the final 10 minutes, Colvill struck again to record her brace and seemingly snatch a brace for the hosts as they levelled proceedings at 2-2.

Parity was short lived however, and when Wright struck in the dying minutes of regulation time it all but sealed the three points for Mark Risteski’s side. They now face a clash with Tuggeranong United in round six, while the Academy will shape up against Belconnen United at McKellar Park.

 

Belconnen United 3 (Maddy Whittall 28’, 65’, Jessie Williams 72’) def. Tuggeranong United 0

A 3-0 win over Tuggeranong United helped Belconnen continue their perfect start to the season on Saturday night at McKellar Park.

The hosts looked to take over the game early and scored just inside the half hour mark as Maddy Whittall got on the board. Lauren Keir broke down the right and whipped in a good cross to the 2017 Golden Boot winner who fired home from close range.

Tuggeranong looked to fight their way back into the match and to their credit did a good job of keeping the Blue Devils out as they made their way into the half-time break only a goal down.

The second half began as the first finished, but the hosts slowly began to assert themselves on the match and 20 minutes in Whittall completed her brace as she raced onto a through ball to finish neatly past the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later Jessie Williams got in on the action with a brilliant run and finish, and that was enough to see out the match.

Tuggeranong now face Canberra FC next weekend still looking for their first win of the season, and Belconnen play host to the Academy in a first v third matchup.

 

 

Monaro Panthers 0 def. by Woden-Weston 3 (Cassia McGlashan 52’, 86’, Shaquille Chong 68’)

Woden-Weston turned in a strong second-half performance to pull out a three-goal win over Monaro on Sunday and stop their recent slide.

Gungahlin United Football Club 4 (Freyja Jacobson 24’, 46’, 68’, Erika Pennyfield 70’) def. Canberra Olympic Football Club 2 (Vanessa Ryan 61’, 73’)

Gungahlin United arrested a recent run of losses with a comprehensive 4-2 victory over Canberra Olympic on Sunday afternoon.

The match began as a tight affair, but the hosts slowly began to work their way on top as they started to win the battle in midfield. Bec Kiting played up in the middle for Olympic with Grace Maher on the sidelines, but the visitors struggled to contain a game plan from United that was clearly focused on spreading the ball wide.

Freyja Jacobson opened the scoring after just 24 minutes with a tidy finish, and the hosts continued to threaten leading into the break but were unable to find another goal.

It took only a minute of second half action to double that advantage though, and Jacobson netted her second goal from another good chance to set the tone early in the second half. Olympic got on the board with just under 30 minutes to go as Vanessa Ryan scored on the break, but seven minutes later Jacobson completed her hat-trick to restore the two-goal advantage, and when Erika Pennyfield struck two minutes later the game was all but sealed.

Ryan scored once more to complete her brace with 20 minutes left, but United saw off any danger to finish 4-2 winners and grab an important three points ahead of a clash with Woden-Weston next week.

Olympic will meet Monaro at O’Connor and look to bounce back and retain their spot in the top four.
