NEWS: History made in Women's Div 2 as new clubs debut Senior teams
HISTORY was made on Saturday afternoon at Estuary Reserve in Leopold, when second year club FC Leopold fielded its inaugural Women’s team in the opening round of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 2 competition.
For their opponents Armstrong United, however, the occasion was even more significant as the club’s Women’s team had the honour of being the Pelicans’ first ever team to take the field in what is set to become the newest sporting club in Geelong’s famous white, orange and navy colours.
More than 12 months in the making, the Mount Duneed based club made its on field debut this weekend as the Women’s carved out an exciting 2-2 draw in trying conditions on Saturday, before the Men’s team made its long awaited debut against Bellarine Sharks in the Geelong Region Men’s Division 3 season opener in St Leonards on Sunday.
For the record, Caitlyn Hamilton opened the scoring for FC Leopold in the 30th minute, before player/coach Cassidy John netted Armstrong United’s maiden goal in the 60th minute.
Hamilton scored her brace five minutes later, before Katrina Lee scored the Pelicans’ equaliser in the 70th minute to ensure the points were split on a momentous occasion for female sport in the Geelong region.
