An under-manned Canberra Olympic side bounced back from an opening round defeat to see of Woden-Weston thanks to a late Robbie Cattanach winner.

Belconnen United 0 def. by Tuggeranong United 2 (Danny Crkovski 34’, Aisosa Ihegie 79’)

Tuggeranong United continued their perfect start to the 2018 season with a 2-0 win over Belconnen United at McKellar Park as Aisosa Ihegie starred once more.

The visitors started well and had a chance early from a set-piece but that was defended well, and Finn Jurak was forced into a brilliant save on the ten-minute mark to keep them out.

End-to-end football took over for the first part of the match, but neither side were able to create clear cut chances as the half wore on, until Tuggeranong took the lead just after the half-hour mark.

After a Belconnen foray forward, Tuggeranong broke away on the counter and Ihegie slipped in Danny Crkovski to fire home and give his side a deserved lead.

They carried that lead into the half as the game heated up, with Brad Waters, Jason Ugrinic and Crkovski all shown yellow cards in the minutes leading up to the break.

The hosts came out with more desire in the second half, and Goran Mukevski signaled their intentions when he fired a low drive just wide of the upright in the opening minutes.

Daniel Barac found himself with a good chance inside the final half an hour only to put that wide, and when Ihegie scored with just over 10 minutes left the game was as good as over.

The result leaves Belconnen with a 1-2 record ahead of a crunch clash with Canberra Olympic next Friday night, while Tuggeranong United continue to head the table after three weeks.

 

Monaro Panthers 0 def. by Canberra FC 3 (Julian Borgna 41’, Michael Taurasi 47’, Thomas James 53

Canberra FC got their season off to the perfect start on Sunday with a win and clean sheet against the Panthers at Riverside Stadium.

After waiting almost a month to begin their campaign, the visitors looked to control the game early and took the lead through Julian Borgna’s finish just a few minutes before the half-time break.

That goal set the tone for the second half, and when Monaro struggled to readjust Paul Macor’s side doubled their lead through Michael Taurasi’s strike two minutes into the second forty-five.

And Canberra FC continued to push the tempto, with Thomas James’ 25-yard set piece strike all but sealing the match with a few minutes under forty still to play.

The match petered out from there with neither side creating too many chances, but Macor saw Julian Borgna limp off with an ankle injury and will need a reshuffle ahead of Wednesday’s FFA Cup clash with ANU Football Club at Deakin.
