This is a Memorandum that has been sent to all clubs prior to the season start:
A couple of reminders for clubs to consider before the start of the season:
Clearances and Temporary Permits
- At the most recent Zone meeting, all Leagues agreed to use only full Clearances for player transfers rather than Temporary Permits. Local EP Leagues will be rejecting Temporary permits.
- Full Clearances are to be used for all players, whether they play one game or a full season. It is now all a ‘Clear in-Clear out’ system. This may be inconvenient in the sense that approval from clubs maynot be forthcoming, or on time. However, this should be workable if the player wishes to play and their club would not usually stand against that players decision.
- If there are any questions, please contact the Mid-West executive.
Umpire Abuse
- Please remind and encourage players, coaches, officials and spectators to respect umpires. Umpiring is done by volunteers, is not easy and split-second decisions have to be made. Umpires don’t always get everything right, as with all of us.
- The League recently had a very successful training session for panel and club umpires with Paul Cavanagh, Country Umpire Officer. A follow-up session with Paul will be scheduled for umpires later in the year.
- Hopefully these sessions have given umpires greater confidence, encourages consistency and enables umpires to use whatever means they have available to keep control of the game.
- There is a shortage of umpires in the Mid-West League and the League wants to provide a good playing environment for everyone. Hopefully a good environment will encourage people aspiring to be umpires to take up umpiring in the future. The League does not want to see new umpires, or any umpires to be abused or treated badly. No-one deserves abuse.
Sling Tackling
- Please make all players, including visiting players, aware that sling tackles are considered very dangerous and are not on.
- Sling tackles most often involve having the tackled players arms pinned, with a double movement, and having the intent of hurting the player, often by hitting their head on the ground.
- All umpires are aware of sling tackles and will be penalising players accordingly.
Good luck to all clubs and let’s enjoy another great year of footy!
Regards
Matthew Cook
