Season Preview: Armadale

Football West News

Last season was one of improvement for Armadale. The club finished 11th with 27 points, eight points more than 2016 and well clear of the relegation zone.

It was the club’s 13th season in the top tier of WA football and although coach John O’Reilly was pleased with the improvement, he is looking for more from his chargers this season.

“2017 was the start of change at Armadale - losing is not acceptable,” he said. “The players’ mindsets had to change and performing on the day has become paramount. We had players at the club last year that wanted to be here and make a difference - the challenge now is to continue that trend.

“Pre-Season has been going well. We have a lot of new faces this term. The lads are bonding well and creating a great comradery.”

O’Reilly said he is looking for strong performances from a number of young players who have come through the club's junior set-up in 2018.

"We want to be in touching distance of the top four at the mid-way point, and then we can re-assess the second half of the season,” he said.

“We know the usual suspects in Bayswater and Inglewood, with Floreat and Perth close on their tails, but we are relishing the challenge.

“We added a number of players and the youngsters who have stepped up are showing me they want to play in the first team.

“Alex Bond is a very dynamic talent and his progression since the start of 2017 has been very pleasing.”

Former Perth Glory Youth defender Nathan Castello will captain the side in 2018, who was the choice of the club’s players.

“Nathan played at the club as a youngster and he has a never-say-die attitude,” Bond said.

Armadale will open their season when they entertain Joondalup United at Alfred Skeet Reserve on Saturday, February 24 at 7.00pm.
