Season Preview: Subiaco
Football West News
Subiaco were the big improvers in 2017, and a lot of the credit goes to their new player/coach Ian McMurray, who steadied the ship and helped the club to a respectable eight place on the table.
They will go into their fifth season after reaching the Final of the NPLWA Night Series. McMurray said they want to improve, and after the successful Night Series campaign things are looking good. “After how we finished the season everyone involved is keen to improve from it. We know this year will be tougher as we won't be taken so lightly and all teams will be fighting for every point,” he said.
“Getting to the Night Series Final has helped us considerably as with playing competitive matches, you lift that extra level and are more switched on mentally which sometimes in friendlies players are not. We go into the season wanting to avoid relegation first up, but hopefully improve on last year.”
McMurray said pre-season has gone well and it’s given him the opportunity to integrate the new signings into the side. “We added Jackson Dongray, Albert Luwi, Fanuel Dawit, Cherno Bah and Daniel Pearce, but we have also some youngsters making a claim for spot in the side,” he explained.
“We brought Daniel Pearce back from Sorrento, which helped him grow and improve as a player, alongside Robbie Harding. Both are attacking players and intelligent players who give everything every match and training session. They are always looking to improve their game and both have an eye for goal, so I’m excited to see these two play and hopefully hold down positions in the 1st team.”
Subiaco will be led again by keeper Ryan Montgomery, and McMurray said he is essential to help develop their young squad. “Ryan (AKA Ginge) has been our captain for a few years now, he is a very important player for the team. Not only has his ability continually kept us in matches but he commands his area and is always talking and organising players in front of him,” he said.
“He is always encouraging the young lads but also advising them on how to improve which is essential as we are a very young team. The lads all respect him and his banter and his positive attitude is great to have around.”
Subiaco open their NPLWA season with a trip to Dalmatinac Park to meet Cockburn City on Saturday February 24th – 7.00pm kick-off.
