History will be made at Preston City Oval on Saturday May 19 when an AFL South East women’s representative team takes on the Northern Football Netball League.
For the very first time, the best women’s footballers from AFL South East will lock horns in representative football ahead of the senior men’s clash in the 2018 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championship - where the winner between Northern and the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League earns a spot in the top-ranked game in 2019.
The addition of the senior women’s match makes for a massive triple-header of interleague football – with an under-19 men’s game to kick-off proceedings on the day.
AFL South East will be coached by Eastern Devils premiership coach Megan Snart, the inaugural South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) Coach of the Year who is looking forward to taking on the best that Northern has to offer.
“I’m just excited by the opportunity to work with the most talented players in the region and to test ourselves at the highest level of community football,” Snart said.
“It’s indicative of the strength of our league that several of the girls that played in our competition last year have made their way onto VFL lists. It’s just very exciting and I can’t wait to begin the challenge.”
AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson was delighted about the prospect of senior women's representative football making its debut on the calendar.
“The prospect of women footballers proudly representing their league is genuinely exciting and a great opportunity for those players and coaches to share in the long and proud history of interleague football,” Anderson said.
“We look forward to a great day of competition against Northern on May 19.”
NFNL chief executive Peter McDougall said he was delighted to announce the league’s first foray into senior women’s representative football.
“This is a great opportunity for the best women’s players from both leagues to showcase their talent on the representative stage,” McDougall said.
“With the success of last season’s inaugural NFNL Women’s competitions we are looking forward to putting together a talented squad for this historic game.”
AFL South East will announce a training squad in the coming weeks with three training sessions taking place in the lead up to the big game.
