Waardenburg, Reed, Blair and Talma shine
Both Tera Reed and Sam Waardenburg produced career best scoring efforts for their respective colleges last week.
Reed has been outstanding all season for Virginia Commonwealth University Rams. Against Duquesne Reed posted 27 points on 11 from 18 (61%) shooting but it wasn’t enough with the Rams falling 80-71.
The Rams bounced back on Sunday outlasting St Bonaventure 77-75 in overtime and improving to 3-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Reed filled the stats line with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in the win.
The Waardenburg numbers don't appear as impressive as Reed’s but the former Rangitoto College forward played a major role for the Miami Hurricanes as they held off Wake Forrest to win 87-81 on Wednesday. Miami followed that with a narrow 72-70 loss at Boston College and are now 7-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Waardenburg posted 6 points (2/3 3PG) and a team best 3 steals.
Earning more and more trust from Miami head coach Jim Larranaga and his staff, Waardenburg played most of the second half in a tight, enthralling contest against Wake Forrest. The stretch four made three from three triples and three from four free throws when the game was in the balance. He finished with 12 points, three rebounds, an assist and a block.
On Tuesday (US time) this week the fourth placed Hurricanes will cross swords with conference leaders and the No 2 ranked Virginia who of course have Jack Salt anchoring their stingy defence – that should be worth watching. Salt had a pair of points and rebounds in Virginia’s first conference loss of the season when they went down in overtime 61-60 to Virginia Tech at the weekend.
Alex Talma had a tremendous week for Biola Eagles. The Eagles website claimed Holy Name University were ‘Talmanated’ after Talma made it two double-doubles in as many games with 21 points and 12 rebounds in their 84-64 victory.
He followed that up at the weekend with 22 points, all scored in the second half, although Biola were thumped 96-59 by California Baptist. After a disastrous start to PacWest Conference play Biola have won four of the last six games to move to 4-12.
Brooke Blair bounced back in style from a poor midweek showing against Northern Colorado when she failed to score for the first time this season. Against North Dakota she rattled off a team high 19 points (6/11FG) for Idaho State Bengals as they won 68-55 to improve to 7-5 in the Big Sky Conference. The 19 points tally moved Blair past 300 points for the season at an average of 13.6ppg.
Tiarna Clarke had a handy 6 points (2/4 3PG) and 5 rebounds to help Northern Colorado Bears move to 10-3 in Big Sky Conference play with a narrow 71-69 overtime win against Weber State. The scores were locked at 60 points apiece after fourty minutes.
Unlucky for some but not Ella Fotu and Hawaii Pacific Sharks. Fotu contributed 8 points (3/5FG), 3 rebounds and a block as the Sharks tore Hawaii at Hilo apart winning 75-36 to record their 13th conference win of the season. The table-topping Sharks improved their PacWest Conference record to 14-1 (unbeaten in 16 games overall) on Saturday beating Fresno Pacific 68-60. Fotu fouled out in 19 minutes in that one after collecting 7 points and 4 rebounds.
15 points and 9 rebounds then 14 points and 8 rebounds from Katie Diakhaby but Northeastern Junior College lost twice in three days going down 89-80 to Eastern Wyoming then 74-60 at Otera. Northeastern are 7-6 in conference play.
Reinstated into the starting lineup Olivia Bell had 2 points, 4 rebounds and a brace of blocks as North Dakota State (9-0) remain unbeaten in conference play with a 72-58 win against Dawson College. Teammate Georgia Perrott-Hunt was in good form with 7 points (3/4FG), 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
