The inaugural Eastern Zone Premier Netball Competition begins this Friday 2nd February. The first matches to take place will be out at Latrobe Leisure Centre in Churchill where the Gippsland League Red Open team will lead off the competition when they play the AGL Loy Yang North Gippsland Football Netball League. The 8:30pm timeslot will see the Gippsland League Blue Open side play the East Gippsland Football Netball League while the 17 & Under side will debut against Mid Gippsland Netball Association.
The 2018 competition will see TRFM Gippsland League feature two Open sides. GL Blue will be led by reigning MVP and Joe Hutchison Medallist Stacie Gardiner, with 17 & Under coach Krissy Travers backing up to coach the young GL Red side. "It's a great show of support for the competition and the TRFM Gippsland League representative programs from our players" said League Operations Co-ordinatior Daniel Heathcote "The competition offered us the opportunity to place in a second Open side and we had around 18 players put their hand up to play. Stacie & Krissy have put in a lot of work making this happen and it will be great for the development of our League and players.
Both sides feature a very young core of players which is an exciting sign for the future of the League. From last season’s 2017 Eastern Regional Victorian Netball League championship side there is only Stacey O'Brien, Daisy Hill & Caitlan Ponton featuring in this year’s competition.
