NEWS: Revised Geelong Community Cup draw released as Ducks pull out of tournament
DUE to insufficient squad numbers, Deakin Ducks has withdrawn from the Geelong Community Cup, which kicks off at Geelong Soccer Club’s Stead Park complex next Wednesday evening.
It was always going to be a battle for the ‘Students’ to attract a full squad, with the majority of its playing stocks filled by Deakin University students who don‘t commence their studies until early March.
The Ducks’ withdrawal means this year’s version of the long running and prestigious annual tournament will include six teams – hosts Geelong, Corio, Geelong Rangers, Golden Plains, Bell Park and tournament debutantes Barwon SC.
The Revised Draw was released this week and will see Golden Plains and Corio kick off the five week event at 6:30pm on opening night on Wednesday 31st of January.
Their clash will be followed with tournament hosts and overwhelming title favourites Geelong taking on new State League 5 minnows Barwon SC in a true ‘David and Goliath’ contest at 8:00pm.
A special Women’s exhibition match will take place prior to the 3rd v 4th Place Play-off on Wednesday 28th of February, when Barwon Women take on the newly formed Geelong Rangers Women’s team at 6:30pm.
Another special Women’s exhibition game will be staged as the curtain raiser to the Grand Final on Friday 2nd of March, when Geelong Region Division 1 outfit Geelong Women challenge newly promoted Division 1 side Bell Park at 6:30pm, with the 1st v 2nd Grand Final to follow at 8:00pm.
