AFL Darling Downs is pleased to announce that two new teams have been granted Westpac Women’s licenses for season 2018, taking the overall competition participating teams to seven.
Coolaroo and University Cougars will enter teams in the expanded competition.
“The increase in competition numbers is a testament to the rapid growth of the female football landscape, with recently release of AFL participation figures showing females now account for 39.9 percent of all Queensland and Northern Rivers participants,” AFL Queensland Regional Manager for the Darling Downs Jeff Neumann said.
The addition of the Roos’ and Cougars, takes the overall competition to seven teams with the new teams joining powerhouse the Toowoomba Tigers, Dalby Swans, South Burnett Saints, South Toowoomba Bombers and the Lockyer Valley Demons for season 2018.
The Westpac Women’s competition kicks off after Easter, on Saturday 21st April with the official fixture released in early 2018.
Neumann said the growth also provided opportunities for those wanting to be involved off-field.
“Clubs aren’t just about the player – they also need coaches, umpires, team managers and match officials. This is the perfect time for people to contact their local club to find out how they can get involved,” he said.
