NEWS: Geelong to host newly crowned Australian Sports Team & Sportswoman of the Year in November

GEELONG will play host to the Women’s Health Australian Sportswoman of The Year as well as the Australian Women’s Team of the Year when the Matildas take on China in a full scale international football friendly at GMHBA Stadium (Simonds Stadium) on Sunday November 26.

Kerr, who will this year play for Perth Glory in the Westfield W-League, picked up the Women’s Health Sportswoman of The Year at a glitzy awards ceremony on Wednesday night after a record breaking year with United States National Women's Soccer League side Sky Blue as well as the Matildas.

The super talented 24-year-old had an outstanding 2017 campaign for the New Jersey based Sky Blue, claiming the Golden Boot after finishing the season with 17 goals over 22 appearances. Her 17 goals eclipsed the previous NWSL record of 16 that was set by former Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little in 2014.

The Perth Glory striker also had a great year on the international stage, scoring seven goals for the Matildas, including a hat-trick against World Cup finalists Japan and a further four goals in three matches against powerhouses Brazil.

Kerr wasn't the only one recognized from Australian football, as the Matildas took home the team of the year award after a historical 2017 which included winning the Tournament of Nations and defeating Brazil in front of over 17,000 people at a sold-out McDonalds Stadium in Newcastle – a record attendance for a women’s sporting event in Australia.

The Matildas will take on China in a two match series in November, with the first game to be played midweek on Wednesday Nov 22 at AAMI Park and the Geelong clash four days later at the newly renamed GMHBA Stadium.

Kicking off at a family friendly time of 4:30pm, more than 10,000 fans are expected to attend the Geelong game – the first full football international (Male or Female) to be held in the City by the Bay.
