NEWS: Barwon defeats Drysdale in semi-final upset to book Grand Final date with Deakin
BARWON SC caused arguably the upset of the year last Saturday to defeat league champions Drysdale in the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 semi-final and qualify for this Saturday’s Grand Final against reigning premiers Deakin Ducks.
Drysdale went into the match at Howard Glover Reserve severely disadvantaged with the unavailability of the team’s leading goalscorer Serena Clapp, who had injured her knee a week earlier in the last round of the regular season.
Clapp, who had scored a total of 28 goals this season, was sorely missed as her Drysdale teammates battled hard to take a 1-0 lead at the break and score another in the second, but also conceded two goals in the second period to force the game into extra time.
Captain Nicole Carter and Jennifer Hogan were the scorers for Drysdale, while Amy Ralph and Rachel Robertson found the net for Barwon during regular time and Jane Lucas scored the eventual match winner in extra time.
A rampaging Deakin Ducks, meanwhile, totally outclassed Surf Coast at Deakin University Sports Fields in Waurn Ponds to run out 7-2 winners and book a spot in this weekend’s Grand Final.
League Golden Boot Hannah Gordon scored a brace to take her season’s tally to an impressive 35 goals, while Lena Mungenast netted a hat-trick to take her tally to 13 goals this year. Romani Leech scored one goal while the other goal was credited as an own goal.
The names of Surf Coast FC’s goalscorers were not submitted by the club.
Deakin, which took out the coveted League Champions’ and Grand Final double last year, will be aiming to make it back to back Grand Final triumphs when it takes on Barwon at Stead Park on Saturday.
The Women’s Grand Final has been scheduled as a standalone fixture, in an attempt to attract as big a crowd as possible. Kick-off is set down for 3:15pm on the main pitch.
