Goondiwindi’s David O’Toole claimed the 2017 Holman Medal, the AFLDD’s highest individual footballing honour on Saturday night.
O’Toole, the Hawks’ player/coach, finished the home and away season on 21 votes, three ahead of South Burnett’s Nathan Trace on 18.
Dual Holman Medallist, Goondiwindi’s Jeremy Leahy finished third with 16 votes, two ahead of Coolaroo’s Corin Sankey and four clear Michael Langton from the Roos’ who polled 12.
O’Toole, who has played 116 senior games for Goondiwindi, hasn’t missed a beat in 2017. He has played a starring role in the Hawks’ forward half this year, but has also been versatile enough to play a lock down role down back, as well as impact in the middle of the ground.
He started the year in perfect fashion, polling three lots of three votes in the first four rounds round, before storming home with two best-on-grounds in rounds 12 and 13.
As well as taking out the Holman Medal, David O’Toole also claimed the John Green Trophy, as the Allied Pickford’s Cup leading goal kicker, with 67 goals.
O’Toole was also close to claiming the Bill Shaw Medal for men’s representative player of the year, however South Toowoomba’s Jonathan Leidig claimed that award after progressing to represent the region in the South Queensland men’s team.
University Cougars Evan Cooper, took home the Leo Camm Rosebowl Rookie of the Year after a stellar 13 game debut season.
Young up and coming star Keegan Wright of South Burnett, earnt himself the Karl Price Trophy as the best Under 18 player in the Allied Pickford’s Cup. Wright played 15 games, kicked 4 goals and collected 4 votes to finish equal 18th in the Holman Medal vote count.
