West Coast Hawks champion ruckman Dylan Kelsh has won the 2017 Mail Medal ahead of high leaping team mate Cameron Montgomerie and Wirrulla work horse Ryan Watson, who each take home the Presidents Medal. Despite missing three games, Dylan polled an outstanding 46 votes, holding a lead most of the way through the season, which held out the West Coast Hawks own view, given he also finished second in the Most Valuable Player award, as judged by clubs. The Hawks performed very strongly in the count, Montgomerie with 33 votes, Dolling and Mc Evoy 27 votes each. Jake Mc Evoy wins the League JV Day Medal as the best under 21 player. The Hawks have swept through the minor round undefeated, with this form strongly reflective in the count.
Adding to the weight of awards heading to the Hawks nest , team mate Aiden Whitford has won the JH Mc Kenna Trophy as the leagues leading goal kicker. 66 goals from 14 games spear heading a precision Hawks looking to add club level honours on Grand Final day.
Wudinna United’s Jack Lange has taken out the Flow FM Most Valuable Player award, a testament to a stand out season, particularly the second half of the year. Jack has been outstanding in a year that the Magpies have struggled to win games despite many close matches.
The Reserves Montgomerie Medal has been won by Shard Gosling, leading a resurgent Tigers B Grade. Shard is a speedy and highly skilled contributor, polling 20 votes from 10 matches played. Narrowly behind and taking out the Bob Whetstone Medal is 2015 Montgomerie Medallist David Moyse who polled 19 votes from 10 games. Maybe an injury incurred in the first half of round 15 match impacted his chances for another Montgomerie Medal?
Colts Lockwood Medal was fought out between the winner Ryan Lymn from Wudinna United and Doug Fox Medal winner, runner up, Corey Waters from Central Eyre. Ryan led all the way to poll 64 votes, a huge tally, but a late charge saw Corey close with 62 votes. Both players are role models at the clubs and prolific midfielders. The ladder leading Hawks attracted the most votes overall as a club.
The League extends it’s gratitude to Central Eyre as hosts of the count and ceremony at Kyancutta 19 August 17. Congratulations to all award winners, very worthy recipients recognising high achievement in our league and sport!
