Adrian Bond was the scorer of the Waves’ only goal before Craig Cameron-Smith went on one of his powerful runs and found Barwon skipper Ian Nichols at the top of the box to level the game with a well taken strike.
The scores remained locked at 1-1 until the interval.
In the second half, Barwon ran riot to score five unanswered goals. Cameron-Smith scored two, to take his season’s tally to 14 goals, as did Adam Leather who scored a single, while Sean Mahon also netted a brace.
On Friday night, Barwon Heads continued its late season surge with a fine 4-2 victory over second last placed Surf Coast FC at Village Park.
David Corden, Nick Critchell and David Sandell were the scorers for the Hammerheads with the 4th goal an own goal. Printo Sidauruk notched up his 10th goal of the season while Anthony Seraiocco scored his first of the season for the Coasters who played the game with only ten men.
On Sunday, in a replay of last season’s Grand Final, Rangers smashed five unanswered goals past the reigning champions Deakin Ducks at Deakin University.
Darren Mccallum bagged a double, while Daniel Earley and Nicholas Hogan scored one apiece. An own goal added to Deakin’s woes, who have now slipped to 7th on the ladder.
It must be made clear, however, this is effectively Deakin’s third team, now that the best two squads have moved on to the FFV Metropolitan State League Five (Saturday) competition.
Meanwhile, across town at Howard Glover Reserve, new club FC Leopold caused a major boilover recording only its second ever victory in the Div 1 comp after coming away with a 2-1 win over Drysdale SC.
