Get to Know: Shani Amos
Wolfpack Media caught up with popular and highly-respected Lady Wolves Captain Shani Amos, on the eve of the Association's 'Farewell JBS' game, to hear her views on a life in Basketball and the club's impending venue change.
Name: Shani Amos
SBL Games Played: 217
Position: Point Guard
Why do you play for the Wolves?
My original junior club was Eastern Suns and I made the move all the way up to the Wolves when I followed Ryan Hunter, who was my first Coach (and current WBA President) here back in Under 14’s.
I used to live up in the hills around an hour away from the club so it was a massive move for me and my family but it was the best decision I have made.
I played for the Wolves and have continued playing for the wolves because it is more than just a basketball club it is a family and I humbled to represent such an amazing club.
Favourite Players of all time?: (Male and Female)
Michael Jordan & Tully Bevilaqua.
Further goals in the game?:
Having played at the higher level of WNBL, I would love to get back there but for now I am happy with taking the Wolfpack to the Championships and winning the Grand Final in 2017 and beyond.
Approach to preparation?:
Having had 4 knee surgeries in the past I need to be very careful with my training load and gym load. I try to keep as fit as possible with training hard and eating healthily. As for game prep I always tend to go shopping on game day (good ritual I know!) and always eat a big meal before I play.
Approach to leadership?:
In my second year as captain I am loving my role as leader in this team. It is a completely different role than I am used to but it makes me appreciate all my past captains I have played for because their role was tough!!!
I try to be the best version and player of myself and demand that of my playing group. You have to act, play and lead the team in a way you want others to act, play and lead so it is important to always be at my best and show a confident front.
One of the awesome parts of being a captain is being able to voice my knowledge to the younger girls in the group and watch their games develop.
Expectations for the Wolves new stadium?
I have bitter sweet feelings of the new stadium because I have spent around the last 14 years playing in the old one and it is what I associate as the home of the Wolfpack but saying that, how can I really be upset when we are moving into an absolutely awesome state of the art building?
A building built just with us in mind and with people who have worked so hard to achieve all the things a good stadium should have. I have had quite a few people ask me about the stadium and asking if the ‘feeling’ will be the same and I always say the same thing, it’s the people involved in this club that are special not just the building so we can generate that feeling in this new stadium.
So long answer short, I am excited!
Where do the Lady Wolves finish this year?
With 1 game out of the regular season right now we are tracking to finish around 6th. With a good start to the season and then losing our way in the middle of the season I feel we are coming back strong and playing our best basketball at the perfect time of the year, play-offs time.
If we continue to work together and grow even more as a team through these finals I believe we could go the whole way! We lost by 2 points in the grand final last year and we won’t stop trying until we are holding that trophy up this year.
Advice: Stay tuned :)
