NEWS: Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 – Round 12 Review
FC LEOPOLD created history on the weekend when the debutante club won its first ever Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 game, defeating Lara United 4-2 in a Round 12 fixture at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday.
There were four individual goalscorers for the Greens, which included Neil Cook, Riley Dean, Luke Foster and Joel Milinkovic, while James Cogan and Colin Pollock managed to get onto the scorers’ sheet for the home side.
After the game, FC Leopold president Mitch Vials was understandably an elated man.
"It was a great feeling to finally get the win we have been working hard for and we will now be hoping that we can push on from this result and finish the season off strongly. It was a great performance from the boys and a very proud moment for myself and all involved at the club,” Vials said.
Meanwhile, across town, top side Barwon SC defeated second placed Breakwater Eagles 3-2 to open up a handy seven point gap at the top of the competition standings with six rounds to go.
Craig Cameron Smith netted a brace while an own goal from a Sean Mahon set piece got the table toppers over the line against Eagles. For Breakwater, Brandon Duthie notched up his 11th goal of the season while Jack Wilson was the scorer of the other goal.
On Friday night, Surf Coast defeated Deakin Ducks 2-1 at Banyul Warri Reserve. John Clark and Jay Christou were the scorers for Surf Coast, while Chris Bray scored the solitary goal for the Ducks.
Also on Friday night, Surfside Waves and Drysdale played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Shell Road Reserve in Ocean Grove. Noah Mujica was the scorer for the Waves, while Rhys Clapp found the back of the net for Drysdale.
In the remaining match played on Sunday afternoon at Myers Reserve, traditional powerhouse Geelong Rangers overcame a dogged Barwon Heads to win 2-1 and solidify its third placing on the ladder. Darren Mccallum scored both goals for the winners.
