Mitchell Small is a footballer making the most of every opportunity he has been given by the Shepparton Swans.
He has had to overcome a major injury setback last year and further complicating things is the fact he is living with Type one diabetes.
The 17-year-old is the latest rising star nominee of the Goulburn Valley League.
He crossed to the Swans from Katunga this season, citing the opportunity to play with some good mates as one of the main factors.
“The Swans were always keen on me and the ones that keep asking me to come in and play with them,’’ he said.
“I also wanted to play with Jared Service and Isiah Jones who are my good friends.”
His debut proved to be a baptism of fire against the reigning premier.
After that game, Small says the boys have really started to play much better, especially in the last five weeks.
“Paul has been great. I’ve learnt heaps, especially with the new structures,’’ he said.
“He connects well with everyone and he communicates very well.”
Small says Griffiths has played him in a variety of positions before settling to the backline in recent weeks.
He says it was an easy decision to re-sign with the club.
“It is a great club, with a lot of young boys.”
