Wolves U16 Championship Boys def Willetton Tigers

The Joondalup Wolves U16 Championship Boys side has delivered a stunning victory against Willetton Blue, a previously unbeaten team in the Championship division and feared by other Associations. 

The Wolves first game against them was in round 3, where they lost by 18pts. During that game the Wolfpack came within 8pts of them twice, which was a great positive for the team, adding confidence and belief for the Wolves when two sides met again over the weekend. 

Head Coach Corry Wellsteed caught up with Wolfpack Media, and provided the following insights. 

Focus + Game Plan

- Going into this game, I used film from our first game to identify some of their key movements in offense and defence. We went through these specific movements at training as well as focussing on our movements and doing those little things right.

- Our big focus for the last month or so has been attitude and effort. We have been working hard on focussing on the task at hand and the things we can control, not sweating the little things and not dropping our head if things aren’t working or going our way.

- Our other focuses were on our match ups, as it was going to be tough, Willetton are a lot taller and more athletic than us across the board, and also upon making adjustments offensively and defensively.

Team Effort

Our win on the weekend was a great team effort. We out played them in all aspects of the game. Willetton are a very skilled and talented team, we just stuck to our game plan, executed well and gave everything we had. I was very proud of all the boys.

David OKWERA and Justin HOSKING were very consistent throughout the game. They played massive roles and fulfilled them very well on and off the court.

Other standouts were Jackson PICKETT who stepped up in the absence of our starting big man, Andrew WAGENNAAR who was out sick.

Gab CHADINHA, Bailey HISLOP and Caspian BENNETTS were also very consistent throughout the game adding value in both offense and defence as well as on the bench. Luca O'BRIEN and Will SELWOOD showed great hustle and intensity in defence making it exceptionally hard for their guards to score. Miles WEEMES came off the bench, playing limited minutes and made a great impact on the offensive and defensive boards.

 

State Team Recognition

Congratulations is further extended to David OKWERA and Jackson PICKETT for making the U16 State Team Reserves for 2017. They have been working tirelessly for several months and this recognition is entirely deserved. Well done guys!

We have nationals in a few weeks, with many Wolfpack people involved across playing, coaching and managing, it would be great to see lots of Wolves people down at Warwick for Nationals week during the 2nd week of the holidays - more info to come.
