'MAGIC' McKENNA LIGHTS UP GERALDTON
The Joondalup Wolves Divsion 1 Men's team travelled to Geraldton on Saturday afternoon, in the Wolfpack's first exposure to the new country trip curtain raiser concept.
It was a stacked Division 1 Wolves team that travelled, featuring SBL contracted players that included Sam CURTIS, Lachie STRELEIN, Ben GASPAR and Mitch McKENNA, along with 16yo WABL stars Dan VLAHOV and Kye CHAMBERLAIN.
Amazingly, and in such a strong sign for the future, a group this laden with Wolves and WA representative talent didn't include Jamie HEPBURN and Joel OFFEREINS, who were both unavailable.
Under the guidance of Coach Doug GATES, and Assistants Ben McFARLANE and Fraser BROWN, the Wolves were determined to continue on from last weekend's superior second half showing, which was an illustration of the team-first Basketball that this hugely gifted group can produce.
They did not disappoint.
With the 200cm GASPAR controlling the paint, including some explosive dunks that almost bely his (only) 17 years of age, he was a dominant force in the game, ably supported by fellow big Jacob ALEXANDER.
Seasoned shooters Dan BROWN, Bailey BASSO and Dan VLAHOV kept the scoreboard ticking at a manic rate, though the night truly belonged to 'Magic' Mitch McKENNA, who completely lit up.
McKENNA, a popular Wolves junior who at this level is a hard working and versatile 2-3 man, but also comfortable when required to pinch hit at the low post, put together a masterclass of 31pts which included 9 triples. His hot hands decimated the Buccs, in a 3-ball shooting clinic.
A huge win to the Wolves, and huge signs for club depth and talent.
