NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s League – Round 8 Review
DRYSDALE and Deakin Ducks both recorded big wins in Round 8 of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 on the weekend, to pull away from the chasing pack at the top of the league standings.

Buoyed by the news this week that the Women’s Division 1 league winner (i.e. ‘first past the post’) will be invited to participate in an inaugural Victorian regional champions’ tournament in Bendigo later this year, the two Grand Final combatants from last year will be even more eager to outdo the other come the end of the season.
Kicking off the round last Friday night, Drysdale made the short trip to Village Park to tackle second last placed Barwon Heads and came away with an emphatic 6-0 victory. Serena Clapp bagged a hat-trick to take her season’s tally to 14 goals, while 14 year old Catie Hodge, Jennifer Hogan and captain Nicole Carter all chipped in with singles.
In the other Friday night fixture at Banyul Warri Reserve, third placed Surf Coast suffered a shock loss at the hands of 5th placed Barwon SC, eventually going down 1-2 to the Grovedale based outfit. Samantha Walsh scored for the Torquay side, while Olivia Parrington secured a match winning brace.
On Saturday afternoon, Deakin Ducks defeated Kardinia in the battle of the ‘Students’ at Kardinia International College in Bell Post Hill. Hannah Gordon netted her 16th goal of the season to maintain top spot on the Golden Boot Award charts, while Anastasia Globa was the other goalscorer for the Duckettes. The third goal was registered as an own goal.
In the final match of the round, bottom side Geelong hosted Surfside Waves, who came away from Stead Park 3-0 victors, thanks to a double from Gina Murphy and a single from Lili Woodward.
Despite the win, the Waves remain in 6th spot on the ladder but are now just separated by three points from 4th placed Kardinia.
