NEWS: Geelong Region League Men’s Division 1 – Round 8 Review
BARWON SC has extended its lead at the top of the Geelong Region Men’s Division One standings following a comfortable 4-1 win over Lara United at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday. Second placed Breakwater Eagles, meanwhile, could only manage a 3-3 draw in a shock Round 8 result against second last placed Barwon Heads.

Buoyed by the news this week that the Division 1 league winner (i.e. ‘first past the post’) will be invited to participate in an inaugural Victorian regional champions’ tournament in Bendigo later this year, Barwon heads the competition standings on 22 points – four ahead of its nearest rival, the Eagles.
The league’s leading goalscorer Adam Leather notched his 9th goal of the season, while Sean Mahon jumped to equal second on the goalscorers’ chart with his 6th of the season. Oliver Hunniford and Liam Fiolet were the other two scorers for Barwon. The name of Lara’s lone scorer was not submitted by the club.
At Village Park in Barwon Heads, the home side almost caused a boilover when it managed to keep high flying Breakwater to a 3-3 draw. Chris Appleford, Nicholas Clissold and captain Adam Van Den Broek all scored for the Eagles. The scorers for Barwon Heads were not submitted by the club.
Debutante club FC Leopold is still seeking its first (historic) Seniors’ win after narrowly going down to reigning champions Deakin Ducks 2-1 at Estuary Reserve on Sunday.
President Mitch Vials was the lone scorer for the Greens, while Anjelo Ojwiya netted a brace to bring his season’s tally to six and jump to equal second on the Golden Boot Award table.
Over at Howard Glover Reserve, Drysdale SC maintained its recent unbeaten run with a solid 2-0 win over Surf Coast, courtesy of goals by Rhys Clapp and Nick Hopper. Drysdale has cemented its top five position with the win and finds itself just one point away from 4th placed Surfside Waves.
The Waves made the trek to Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill, looking for a positive result against last year’s beaten Grand Finalists, Geelong Rangers. Rangers attacker Ben Noble, however, had other ideas as he scored a hat-trick to single handedly put to rest Surfside’s winning ambitions.
Apart from Noble’s triad of goals, Zach Narry and evergreen veterans Scott Davison and Darren Mccallum also managed to get on the scoresheet. Mathew Kirk and Niccolo Bassi were the scorers for the visitors.
