Perth SC has overcome its club rival in a 3-1 victory against Bayswater City at Dorrien Gardens yesterday, tightening their grip on the top four rungs of the NPL ladder.

The stakes were high ahead of the game, with Bayswater sitting just three points behind Perth, and enthused from a victory against Cockburn City in round 16.

Both teams went into the second half scoreless, but a Gustavo Catarcione shot from within the goal area put Perth on the scoreboard.

Bayswater evened the score in the 55th minute with a penalty shot by Gustavo Giron Marulanda.

Aleks Jovic found enough space among Bayswater’s defence to score in the 64th minute and Niccolo Sabatini followed up with a penalty shot in the 71st minute, awarded after a rough tackle by Bayswater’s Tom King.

Perth coach Ramon Falzon said it was good to see his team get back on top after their loss to Floreat Athena last week.

“First off I thought it was a bit balanced, for the first 25 minutes I thought they played better than us and created a few chances,” he said.

“The second half was much better, we started creating chances that led to three goals.

“All the boys have done marvellous job and for the goal you need all of the chain to be working.

“I always say that we are as strong as our weakest link and today we didn’t have any weak links.”

Neither side gave any quarter in this showdown, with yellow cards being given to Bayswater’s Stokoe and Paul McCarthy and Perth’s Tom King.

Bayswater were the more dominant side in the first half, with Jason Micro and Andrija Jukic taking shots in the 4th and 9th minutes, which were skilfully saved by Perth’s keeper Francis Soale.

Attempts from Bayswater’s Devon Gibson and Marulanda went over the post in the 28th and 30th minutes.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said his side had a lot of control in the game, but didn’t do enough to capitalise on their chances.

“I thought we controlled the game at some point, but we are too nice,” he said.

“All the teams at the top play long balls and they get it into areas, and they don’t play pretty football.

“Every time they went forward we looked vulnerable and it is not acceptable.

“I keep making excuses every week, but they have got to realise now that they are not top dogs anymore, they have got to earn their right to be at the top of the league.

"They think they deserve to be there on merit and that is just not how football works.”
