NEWS: Armstrong United FC takes its first steps to becoming a club

GEELONG’S newest football club has moved a step closer following the creation of an interim committee, as well as the announcement of several key dates over the coming months as the growing sport looks to gain a foothold in Geelong’s largest growth corridor.

Currently operating under the working title of Armstrong United FC, the proposed new club is hoping to unite the two key estates in the Armstrong Creek/Mount Duneed area, Villawood’s Armstrong/Mt Duneed and the Waralily estates on the eastern side of Surf Coast Highway.

Following an initial call for expressions of interest to help form a steering committee, a series of meetings have resulted in an informal working group coming together to formally establish a new club which is hoped to commence life in the local Geelong Region competitions in 2018.

The taskforce is headed by current Drysdale SC Men’s Masters’ team coordinator and local resident Michael Parker, who has agreed to assume the role of interim president. He is joined by interim secretary Jacky Basset, a ‘soccer mum’ who is also the Manager of the renowned Villawood Properties’ Club Armstrong facility. Ex-Women’s footballer Tayla John makes up the trio as the interim treasurer.

The new club is expected to be based at the Armstrong Oval in Sovereign Drive, a brand new oval shaped, floodlit facility which has already been turfed and has been fully funded by the developers, Villawood Properties.

In order to harness further support from the local community, a Public Information Session/Forum has been locked in for Tuesday July 11 at the Club Armstrong venue in Sovereign Drive.

In addition to the Public Meeting, a ‘MiniRoos Come and Try Day’, which will also double as the official public launch of the new club, will be held in mid September with Football Federation Victoria set to lock in a ‘MiniRoos Kick-Start’ program in early October to help attract Junior numbers for the fledgling new club.
