Peel Cavaliers colts coach Craig Rakich is confident his team has what it takes to travel to Kulin and claim a win in the Great Southern Colts Carnival set to be played this month.
A squad of around 30 players has been training at Pinjarra’s Sir Ross McLarty Oval, with Rakich saying he had been impressed with the side’s ability through their first three sessions.
“The early signs are very encouraging,” he said.
“About half a dozen of the boys played last year and know the carnival pretty well so it’s good to have them back, and overall we have a good mix with some younger blokes also in the squad.”
Rakich, who coaches Halls Head’s colts in the regular season and was the assistant at last year’s Great Southern carnival, said the side’s mixture of height and skills would play a factor in their games.
“We’re much taller than we were last year but I’ve also been really impressed by the skills of the boys,” he said.
“But aside from the footy it’s also a good chance for the boys to make some new mates and it’s just a good experience for them.”
Peel will play their first game against the Goldfields on Saturday, June 17.
The tournament then progresses in a bracket format, with their following games to be determined on the result of the Goldfields match.
Rakich said it would also be a good chance for Peel’s local youngsters to get exposure to WAFL scouts.
“There’s usually a few scouts with their eyes on the carnival so it’s an opportunity for our young blokes to put their best foot forward and maybe get a shot at a higher level,” he said.
“It’s all about developing young footy players and helping them reach the highest point they can.”
The Cavaliers’ official side will be released closer to the tournament.
