Hi all,
Three members of one of Queensland ’s great AFL footballing families will be in action together for Bay Power against Maryborough at Keith Dunne Oval this Saturday afternoon.
Brett Backwell who played for Carlton from 1998 to 2001 before winning the Liston Trophy in the VFL before winning the NTFL Best and Fairest on his way to Glenelg where he has become a vital player winning the SANFL Best and Fairest Magary Medal in 2006 along with some Best on Ground performances in State Games is arguably one of the best Australian footballers outside of the AFL Competition.
This Saturday he will be joining forces with his brother Dean Backwell Bay Power Coach and his father Owen Backwell Assistant Coach to try and help Bay Power across the line against Maryborough in a vital game in what will be a unique coming together of one of Queensland’s great footballing families.
Brett’s CV is well known but it is the matriarch unassuming Owen that is recognised widely through the footballing community. Owen Backwell is a duel winner of AFL QLD State League Best and Fairest award the Grogan Medal and perhaps more significantly was named in the AFL QLD Team of the Century in the forward pocket next to Full Forward Jason Dunstall along with modern stars such as Michael Voss and Jason Akermanis.
Youngest son Dean although not as well credentialed as his dad and older brother is also an outstanding footballer possessing great skill and courage and was an U/18 Captain of the Country Queensland Kookaburras. Unfortunately Deans much lighter frame and not his ability was a restricting factor in him progressing to the elite level of the game.
Owen was prepared to come out of a long retirement this weekend to play with his two sons if Brett was able to gain a release from SANFL club Glenelg and play for the Power under permit. Unfortunately as Brett is one of the clubs key contracted players and sitting pretty on top of the SANFL Ladder at the mid-season break they were not prepared to risk one of the key players in their Premiership aspirations to the rough and tumble of Country Queensland footy.
So Maryborough players can breathe a sigh of relief as the trio will not be playing but Dean will be player/coach, Owen assistant coach and Brett the Runner.
