Rochester teenager Bailey Wileman will remember his debut match for a long time after playing in a victory over arch rival Echuca and kicking a goal.
The 17-year-old says he knew he was in for a tough old afternoon when he was involved in his play.
“My first touch came when I was outside our forward 50 and I handballed it to ruckman Scott Oakley and he handballed it inside 50 where I ran onto and got cleaned up and done for holding on the ball,” he said.
“After quarter time I felt like I fitted in pretty well.”
The Year 12 Rochester Secondary College says he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face at the end of the day.
“Even though I felt very tired I was feeling a lot of joy. Everyone was so supportive and my team-mates were just awesome.”
“To play my first game against our arch rival and come away with the win was everything I dreamed of.”
Wileman credits under-18 coach Elliot Bowen and senior coach James Flaherty for believing him and giving him the opportunity to play senior football.
“I hoping to get more than one senior game and help the thirds to playing finals,” he said.
“It has been a long time since we beat Echuca like we did on the weekend in the thirds and since we have played finals.”
The youngster is one of the club’s young leaders and leads by example through his role as skipper of the thirds.
