PS4 NPL Women's Round 9 Wrap
Belconnen United 5 (Chloe Callaghan 1’, 87’, Maddy Whittall 33’, 68’, 74’)def. Tuggeranong United 0
Belconnen United maintained their lead at the top of the National Premier League Women’s with a 5-0 win over Tuggeranong United on Saturday.
Chloe Callaghan got her side off to the ideal start as she scored in the first minute of the game at McKellar Park, leaving the visitors stunned early. Tuggeranong fought back though, and made their way back into the game as they looked to work their attack through forward Meg McLaughlin. But the home defence held firm for long enough, and they doubled their lead 12 minutes before the break as Maddy Whittall cut inside the 18-yard box and beat the keeper from a tight angle
Up 2-0 at the break, United should have extended their lead just six minutes into the half but Whittall fired over the bar when it was easier to score from close range. Sandra Hill sent a good effort just wide from outside the box as Tuggeranong pushed, but it mattered little as the hosts continued their control of the game, and Whittall grabbed her second in the 68th minute.
She completed her hat-trick six minutes later, cutting inside once more and curling a shot across the goalkeeper, and Callaghan sealed the final score with a brilliant solo goal with only minutes remaining, breaking in behind the defence to finish 1-on-1.

Woden-Weston FC 0 def. by Gungahlin United 3 (Grace Field 17’, Ashleigh Palombi 49’, Erika Pennyfield 56’)
Gungahlin United bounced back from last week’s defeat to Belconnen United with a 3-0 win over Woden-Weston on Sunday afternoon.
Woden-Weston came in off the back of a 3-2 win over the Academy in their previous outing, but struggled early as Gunghalin forced the issue. The visitors found their breakthrough after just 17 minutes, as Grace Field was found with a good pass to fire home Gungahlin’s first.
United looked to extend their advantage as they continued to push, while Woden-Weston tried to get back into the match against the run of play.
With the advantage only goal at the half, the match was still poised evenly, but Ashleigh Palombi put a pause on any comeback hopes just four minutes into the second half as she scored to double the advantage.
That goal wobbled the home side and they looked out of sorts as Erika Pennyfield all but sealed the match seven minutes later as she grabbed Gungahlin’s third goal of the match.
The final half hour petered out with Gungahlin controlling the match, and the resulting win saw them jump their opponents into fourth place on the ladder by two points.
Canberra United Academy 9 (Aiofe Colvill 1’, Karly Roestbakken 10’, 33’, Laura Hughes 25’, 57’, Sarah Morgan 33’, 37’ 66, Molly Lawless 78’)def. Canberra Olympic 0
The Canberra United Academy handed Canberra Olympic another resounding defeat on Sunday, with a 9-0 victory at Hawker keeping them in second place and bringing to an end a run of three straight losses.
The Academy got off to the perfect start as Aiofe Colvill fired home in the first minute, and W-League youngster Karly Roestbakken doubled the advantage after just ten minutes. The Academy pressed and pressed, forcing Olympic to sit deep as they struggled to keep hold of the ball. Olympic held out for 15 minutes before Laura Hughes got in on the act with her first goal, and Roestbakken extended it eight minutes later, with Sarah Morgan grabbing a quick-fire brace within the next four minutes.
The lead sat at six-nil at the break, but Olympic came out with purpose in the second half, not letting the Academy settle as much and looking to create their own chances. Hughes stymied the momentum 12 minutes in though, before Morgan completed her hat-trick nine minutes later. The youngsters refused to settle at eight and continued to push, Molly Lawless rounding out the victory with a 78th minute strike.
