NEWS: Unfortunate accident brings two GRFC clubs closer together

THE GRFC Men’s Division 1 match between Barwon Heads and new club FC Leopold last Friday night at Village Park in Barwon Heads was soured by an unfortunate incident in the 68th minute which resulted in Leopold’s Albert Antony breaking his leg in two places.

Although there was no malice in the Round 5 clash, it is likely the accident will see Antony (pictured) out of action for a significant period of time.

The game was held up for a few minutes while he was stretchered off the ground and taken to the dressing rooms. Fortunately for Antony, he was tended to by one of the opposition players, Michael Sheridan, who just so happens to be a doctor and heads the emergency department at University Geelong Hospital.

After a consultation between both sets of teams, as well as the match official, Leopold’s players decided to proceed with the game as an ambulance arrived within 15 minutes to take Antony to the hospital.

The following day, Barwon Heads’ president, Simon Wrench, contacted FC Leopold to pass on their best wishes to the injured player.

“On behalf of Barwon Heads Soccer Club, we would like to pass on our best wishes to Albert who was injured in our Div 1 game between the two clubs last night. We wish him a speedy recovery,” he said.

“It was a competitive game and played in great spirit. It was unfortunate he was injured in the way he was. We look forward to meeting Leopold again in the season, good luck for the rest of your season guys,” added Wrench.

FC Leopold president Mitch Vials responded with an official note to his Barwon Heads counterpart showing his club’s appreciation of their assistance immediately after the incident.

“A massive thanks to everyone from Barwon Heads Soccer Club who helped out after the incident. It is good to see both clubs come together and help one another when something like that occurs,” Vials commented.

“Thank you very much for the well wishes. I’ll be sure to pass them on to Albi! He had surgery today and from all reports it has gone very well,” added Vials.

On behalf of everyone involved with the game locally, we wish FC Leopold’s Antony Albert a speedy recovery and a successful return to the World Game.
