The Queensland School Sport State Championships are due to kick off on the Sunshine Coast from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th May.
Maroochydore will play host to the Darling Downs 13-16years girls and 13-15years boys teams respectively, as club and school rivalries are put on hold to come together as one. Both teams kick off their campaigns on Thursday with the 13-16years girls up first against the Presidents team at 10:55am and the 13-15years boys from 1:45pm against Peninsula.
The Queensland School Sport State Championships are made up of 10 school regions with AFL Darling Downs club players potentially spread across three school districts. Players across the South Burnett link into Wide Bay and Lockyer Valley players join with Metropolitan West (Brisbane).
Regional Manager for AFL Queensland, Jeff Neumann said it is an exciting time for the region to play against the rest of the State.
“We have fifty boys and girls, from the AFL Darling Downs participating at these championships and for a region, to have that many experience representative football is only going to mean nothing but benefits for our club football land,” Regional Manager Jeff Neumann said.
“Both teams have prepared well leading into the State Championships and we are looking forward to seeing what results come from the Maroochydore Carnival,” Neumann added.
The Queensland School Sport State Championships, are an opportunity for players to be selected in the Queensland State team to play at the Australian School Sport National Championships in July.
Regional Manager Jeff Neumann explained that the region has some amazing talent and quite a few players who would be pushing for selection if they string together consistent performances.
“We are lucky that we have quite a few talented young men and women running around,” Neumann said.
“For the boys the likes of Justus Liddicoat-Hill, Sam Gillespie and Lachlan Davis are all very highly rated juniors.
“And for the girls, Felicity Ash, Zimmorlei Farquharson and Georgia Osborne are very talented players and will be keys to the regions success at the Championships,” Jeff Neumann added.
