NEWS: GRFC Women’s Division 1 – Drysdale sounds out ominous warning to its rivals
DRYSDALE SC sounded out an ominous warning to the rest of the GRFC Women’s Division One field on the weekend, after annihilating Barwon SC 9-0 at Howard Glover Reserve on Saturday.
Serena Clapp was the star of the show with an impressive five goal haul, Shannon Daffy ably assisted with a hat-trick while Catie Hodge chipped in with a single as the Bellarine side completely outclassed Barwon, a previous competition powerhouse which has somewhat struggled so far this season.
The win maintains Drysdale’s two point buffer at the top of the competition standings after the end of Round 5.
Second placed Deakin Ducks made sure it remained within striking distance of Drysdale with a convincing 3-0 defeat of Surf Coast FC at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus last Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Gordon, Imogen Pratt and Sarah Fry all scored singles for the Students as last year’s undefeated premiers aim to make life difficult for Drysdale at the top.
After an indifferent start to its league campaign, third placed Kardinia College has started hitting its straps with a solid 3-1 win over another previous Women’s Div 1 powerhouse outfit, Surfside Waves.
Carly Spehar scored the opener in the 3rd minute, before Ashlee Stavenuiter and captain Caelli Wood added to Kardinia’s scoreline. The name of the Surfside goalscorer was not submitted.
In the final game of the round, in the battle of the cellar dwellers, bottom side Geelong SC earned its first point of the season, fighting out a scoreless draw with second last placed Barwon Heads at Stead Park on Saturday.
