The day when the Dockers' ship finally came in
Wednesday 4 June, 2008
THE Balmain Dockers were the victors in the Sydney Women's AFL all inner-west clash against the Newtown Breakaways at Mahoney Reserve last weekend.
Having only beaten Newtown once in the past eight years, the Dockers had to win to keep second place on the ladder.
From the first bounce the Dockers midfield attacked, and for the first time in weeks the kicks for goal were accurate.
Going with the breeze, the Dockers were up 6.2 (38) to 0.1 (1) at quarter time.
Newtown's backline found some form in the second quarter, with some big tackles and better clearances of the ball, but they were still goal-less at half time.
After the main break there were some terrific contests, with the battle between Balmain full-forward Nat Morgan and Newtown fullback Pam Hulusi a great spectacle.
However the Dockers were the winners on the day, scoring 14.8 (92) to Newtown's 2.7 (19).
Balmain's key goal-scorers were Morgan and Natasha Devlin with four and Kate Goggins with three.
Newtown's goal-scorers were Rebecca Burridge and Cassie Lees.
