TRFM Gippsland League senior interleague football coach Harmit Singh has named a strong line-up for Saturday’s Worksafe Community Championships showdown with AFL Yarra Ranges.
The league’s representative team travels to Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve stocked with plenty of firepower, including AFL Victoria Country representatives Bob McCallum and Mark Collison, ex-AFL star Damian Cupido and reigning league best and fairest Brad Scalzo.
Four players have been selected from outside the preliminary squad, with Moe’s Tyson Biffin, Morwell’s Ryan Tatterson and Traralgon pair Jackson Hall and Haydn Hector drafted into the side on the back of their excellent form through the opening rounds of the home and away season.
Singh was impressed with the calibre of personnel at his disposal and pleased to have the majority of the league’s clubs represented in the final team.
“It’s a strong side and one that we believe is certainly worthy of representing the league and more than capable of ensuring we get the right result,” Singh said.
“The efforts and attitude at training have been really encouraging and the range of options we have going forward should enable us to play an exciting brand of attacking football.”
AFL Yarra Ranges is still to announce its final team, but its initial squad included the likes of ex-AFL ruck-forward Josh Fraser, Woori Yallock forward Ben Monkhorst, son of former VFL-AFL ruckman Damian, and reigning league best and fairest Matt Polkinghorne, who will captain the team one again.
Singh said his team would be prepared for a tough outing regardless of who lines up for the opposition.
“We have plenty of respect for what they will bring to the table and we’re expecting them to come at us hard particularly on their home turf but we won’t be taking a backwards step,” he said.
“Playing away from home is always a test but we have some plans in place that will help our team bond together and we’re really looking forward to the challenge.”
The TRFM Gippsland League’s under-18 football and 17-and-under netball representative teams have also been named, with the open netball team to be finalised soon.
Saturday’s senior football game kicks off at 2.20pm, following the under-18 football curtain-raiser at 11.50am, while on the netball courts, the open game starts at 12.40pm, with the 17-and-under netball beginning at 11.30am.
