Belconnen United claimed a dominant win over Canberra Olympic on Saturday night, condemning one of the competition’s new sides to their fifth straight loss as Chloe Callaghan starred with six goals.

Callaghan opened the scoring after just seven minutes as United poured forward over the top of the struggling visitors, before Karen Clarke doubled the advantage just 13 minutes later. 

Callaghan had a hat-trick by the 27^th minute as she made it 4-0, and Maddy Whittall scored after 37 minutes before Clarke added her second and a sixth for the side before the break.

Olympic struggled to play out from their defence against a well-drilled home side, who gave them no rest and harried them in possession all the time. Whittall grabbed her second goal seven minutes into the second half before Callaghan scored once more shortly after and a fifth minutes later.

With the visitors struggling to create many chances of their own Belconnen continued to run rampant and Callaghan netted her sixth in the 71^st minute before been substituted with six minutes to go. Whittall added two more of her own either side of Jessie William’s 91^st minute strike to complete a ruthless home victory.

 

Gungahlin United 2 (Ashleigh Palombi 47’, Brittany Palombi 62’) def. Tuggeranong United 0

Gungahlin United handed Tuggeranong United their third successive loss on Sunday as sisters Ashleigh and Brittany Palombi both netted in the second half at Gungahlin Enclosed.

A hard-fought first half saw the sides unable to be split, but Ashleigh’s goal just two minutes into the second forty-five paved the way for Gungahlin to get home.

Woden-Weston FC 0 drew. Canberra FC 0

Woden-Weston and Canberra FC played out a hard-fought goalless draw at Woden Park on Sunday in a physical matchup.

Woden-Weston were looking to record their third straight win while Canberra FC wanted to bounce back from defeat in last weekend’s grand final rematch to Belconnen.

Visiting coach Mark Risteski was forced into a couple of early substitutions as injuries took their toll, leaving his side with some tired legs as the game wore on.

With the match flowing from end-to-end, neither side were able to create anything clear-cut in the opening half of football.  

The pace stepped up once more after the break, with both sides probing for openings in the opposition. 

Canberra FC came close late with a number of chances but were not clinical enough to take them, with the match running out as a goalless stalemate. 

 

Canberra United Academy 7 (Karly Roestbakken 16’, Laura Hughes 29’, Gemma Murphy 20’, 49’, Aiofe Colvill 28’, 51’, 55) def. Monaro Panthers 2 (Zoe Szeremet 33’, 37’)

The Canberra United Academy continued their unchecked start to the 2017 season on Sunday with a 7-2 win over Monaro Panthers at Hawker.

The Panthers came in looking to break a run of three straight losses, but fell behind early as Karly Roestbakken opened the scorecard after 16 minutes. Gemma Murphy doubled the lead just four minutes later but the Panthers began to work their way back into the match and create some openings of their own. 

Two goals in quick succession to Aiofe Colvill and Laura Hughes set Panthers back, but a quick fire brace from Zoe Szeremet with 10 minutes left in the half pulled the visitors right back into the contest as they approached the break. 

That was where Panthers chances ended however, with Angelo Maralit’s side struggling to create as the second half got underway. Murphy grabbed her second goal just four minutes after the interval to increase the buffer to three goals, before Colvill grabbed her second and then third in quick succession shortly after to round out the scoring.
